Service Learning

The phrase “service learning” represents a variety of activities and meanings in the multiple contexts involved in the South Carolina Botanical Gardens Sculpture Program. The variety of the courses involved in the program brought and continues to bring a diverse group of students with different interests and talents. The landscape architecture students directly worked on the sculptures and had the opportunity to practice their skills and voice their ideas with the visiting artists. The art students also worked directly on the sculptures with the artists and examine site-specific art. The communication students worked on creating and maintaining the website dedicated to the program as well as working on a book to be published. Though a variety of disciplines, all the students engaged in the type of service learning that not only benefited the program and community, but allowed them to further explore and question what they originally thought of as art. The hands-on experience has eliminated cultural predeterminations and allowed the students to apply the concepts discussed in class. For many of the students involved in the service learning courses, the opportunity has provided many further outlets such as continuous work with the artists, further in depth with the Nature Based Art program, and job opportunities.
